Another blow to the Habeas Corpus
A divided federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld a new law stripping federal judges of authority to review foreign prisoners’ challenges to their detention at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
Another low light in the saddest period for the U.S. Constitution in our history. Fuck every single one of you that voted for Bush. /You/ did this. Not the terrorists, not even Bush really, you that voted for him voted to suspend your fundamental freedoms, and now /you/ can be disappeared at his whim.

Chief Illiniwek "retired"
Illini Pundit* broke the story that Chief Illiniwek will be "retired". The UofI confirmed the story (link goes to .pdf sorry) in a press release stating flatly:
*What is it with the "pundit" thing. Instaputz is a terrible, though prolific, blogger who happened to get there first.
URBANA—The University of Illinois today announced that Chief Illiniwek will
no longer perform at athletic events on the Urbana-Champaign campus after this season’s
last men’s home basketball game in Assembly Hall on February 21.
As a consequence, the University will immediately become eligible to host post-
season National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship events.

Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007
Senator Chris Dodd discusses the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007" -- his legislation to reintroduce the Habeas Corpus into American law.
You can become a "citizen co-sponsor" here. I urge you to do so, and to help us free Adel Hamad, to apply the rule of law to those interred at Gitmo, and to restore the fundamental liberties that have been stripped from us by this administration.

The Evidence is In
And here it is:
This is the evidence the Pentagon is claiming shows that Iran is supplying weapons to Iraqis. As Needlenose points out, "conclusive proof might start with offering images of weapons that don't come with English lettering and a datestamp out of the Christian calendar".
Yes it might start there.

Yes it might start there.
It can happen to you

Dear concerned citizens,
If you value the notions of justice, due process and human decency you will get involved in a worthy project. Project Hamad is such a project. It is beyond doubt that there are innocent people sitting in prisons, detention centers, and military facilities around the world as a result of the federal government’s mismanaged and misguided war on terror.
I can tell you from experience that the government does target innocent individuals and lauds their capture as victories in their fight. But this fight is ruining the lives of people. Real people, with families and spouses, and concerned friends and others who love them and count on them.
Mr. Hamad is one of these people, among scores of others, who had the misfortune of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, secretly abducted and stripped of his freedom.
I too was abducted and stripped of my freedom and subjected to personal pain, humiliation, threats, and uncertainty, not to mention the effect that it had and will continue to have on my family as well. I do not want what happened to me to happen to anyone else, to you and to your family.
Keep up to date with Project Hamad blog, and help us to restore habeas corpus in the United States.
Henry Hudson's Half Moon
Drawing of a replica of Half Moon, Henry Hudson's ship used to explore what would come to be known as the Hudson River.
The sailors of the Half Moon later mutinied and set Hudson, his son, and seven other seaman adrift in an open boat without food or water. Hudson was never seen again.

Blogroll executions
With apologies to Gawker Media:
The Virgin Chronicles: Oh you were cute way back when. A 29 year old New Yorker and virgin trying find the right guy before her 30th birthday. What started as cute quickly became shrill and annoying. With yet another "we just don't have any chemistry" post, she's right she doesn't have any chemistry... ever... with anyone. Give up the blog, then give up the pussy, and get it over with.
Frontpage -- Topix.net: Department of Redundacy. You serve the same purpose as digg et al and you don't do it as well. Any feed not named fark.com (which I read at fark) that consistently sits with 200 unread posts is worthy of execution.
I Am Coconut Man: This was a quality gag... in 2005. It's time has come. It's time has gone.

Sully goes to The Atlantic
Andrew Sullivan's blog has moved to The Atlantic's website. That's cool, but even more cool is the whole blog is readable via RSS feed again. For the past year I've visited Sullivan's actual blog probably 5 times more than any other blog because at Time his RSS feed was the first three lines of the post. Great for advertising purposes I suppose, but bad for the reader.

Drew Barrymore: 'I want to find my adult side'
Curtis Hanson, the writer/director of LA Confidential, insists that he and she are about to change that with the second of her two new films, Lucky You. "I really wanted to give her the opportunity to play what would be perceived as a more womanly character than she has played before." That character is Billy, a wannabe singer who moves to Las Vegas to follow her dreams.
Yet Barrymore seems unperturbed about the industry's perception of her. "I do want to avoid being repetitive and I know I have been. I love romantic comedies. I love happy endings. But I know now that it is time to get in touch with a different side of myself - the one that is mature, adult and dramatic. I do want to be a 'woman' woman rather than a young woman."
